Class Information - Scentwork

As Scent Work classes are very popular, the following applies to classes:

  • On completing two terms in the same class and he requirements to graduate into the next class are not met, students will be put on a reserve list and it recommend that further training be undertaken either in private classes or other locations that conduct Scent work classes. Once they can demonstrate they have the required skills they can then enter the next class.

  • Individuals must  attend a minimum of 50% of the classes to graduate.

 

LEVEL 1

SW001: Scent work beginners  

Class Time: Thursday 6:45 - 7.30pm    

Cost: $40  

Max Number of participants four (4) 

Prerequisities:

  • Graduation from Skills 1
  • Know how to mark a behaviour by using clicker or verbal word.
  • Understand timing of when to mark a behavior.
  • Knows how to use rewards (food and or toys) in timely manner to increase a behaviour
  • Nose touch to hand or object
  • Dog under control and knows basic commands: Come, sit, leave

** Enrolment in this class is for 1 handler training 1 dog.

 

LEVEL 2

SW002: Scent work Intermediate.

Class Time: Thursday 6:45 - 7.30pm    

Cost: $40  

Max Number of participants six (6) 

Prerequisities:

  • Graduated from SW001
  • Demonstrated ability of dog to find and indicate Clove
  • Understands Final Indication required by dog.
  • Knows how to mark indication by using clicker or verbal word.
  • Understand timing of when to mark a behavior.
  • Knows how to use rewards (food and or toys) in a timely manner to increase duration of indication
  • behaviour.

** Enrolment in this class is for 1 handler training 1 dog.

 

LEVEL 3

SW003: Scent work Pre-Trialing

Class Time: Monday 6:45 - 7.30pm    

Cost: $40  

Max Number of participants six (6) 

Prerequisities:

  • Graduated from SW002
  • Demonstrated ability of dog to find and indicate all odours
  • Handler awareness of maintained Final Indication required by dog
  • Understand searching behaviour
  • Some exposure to distractions

** Enrolment in this class is for 1 handler training 1 dog.

 

LEVEL 4

SW004 Scent work Trial preparation

Class Time: Monday  6:45 - 7.30pm   

Cost: $40  

Max Number of participants six (6) 

Prerequisities:

  • Graduated from SW003
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct a short search
  • Demonstrated ability to read and manage dog with non-food distractions
  • Demonstrated ability of lead to manage and control the search
  • Start line set up

** Enrolment in this class is for 1 handler training 1 dog.

 

LEVEL 5

SW005: Scent work Novice

Class Time: Monday 6:30 - 7.30pm

Cost: $40  

Max Number participants six (6) 

Prerequisities:

  • Graduated from SW004
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct a search in all elements
  • Exposure to two or more odours in a search
  • Demonstrated ability to read and manage dog with non-food and food distractions
  • Demonstrated ability off lead to manage and control the search
  • Have some understanding of when the dog is searching or perving.
  • Prepare dogs for search at start line.

** Enrolment in this class is for 1 handler training 1 dog.

 

LEVEL 6

SW006: Scent work Advanced

Class Time: Monday 7:30 - 9.00pm    

Cost: $40  

Max Number of participants six (6)

Prerequisities:

  • Graduated from SW004
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct a Novice search in all elements
  • Exposure to two or more odours in a search
  • Demonstrated ability to read dog behaviour with non-food and food distractions and when in odor
  • plume.
  • Demonstrated lead handling skills to manage and control the search
  • Can use handling skills to increase and maintain hunting/searching behaviour
  • Ability to work dogs off lead.
